What is a Tummy Tuck?
Have you lost a lot of weight and are you suffering from surplus skin? Or have several pregnancies left you with too much skin? Then a tummy tuck can be a lifesaver. The surgeon can remove the excess skin and fat from the abdomen.
Tummy Tuck procedure (abdominoplasty)
Via an incision just above the pubic hair (bikini line) the doctor separates the abdominal skin and the layer of fat from the layer of muscle. If necessary, he loosens the navel. Then the plastic surgeon pulls the layer of skin downwards. If the stomach muscles are too saggy, the doctor ties them together with sutures. Next he places the navel back in position.
For a mini abdominoplasty, the navel remains in its place. The surgeon usually sets up one or two drains. These are small tubes which drain the fluid out of the wound and can be taken out after a few days. The mini abdominoplasty is performed under local anaesthetic, unless the area to be treated is too large. For the extensive version, we use general anaesthetic.
