Veins are blood vessels which – when they work properly – send blood from the tissues back to the heart. Because the blood must go up without flowing back down, there are valves in the blood vessels. This is how it defies gravity. Sometimes these valves do not close properly. The blood then accumulates and there is excess pressure. These are varicose veins!
Varicose veins go hand in hand with heavy, tired and restless legs. You can suffer from swelling, pain and night cramps.
Varicose veins are not only disgracious, they also increase the risk of inflammation, wounds and clot formation. When you get injured they bleed faster.
During a first consultation the surgeon performs a clinical examination. During the examination she will take an ultrasound scan in order to assess the cause and severity of the varicose veins. Together you discuss the results of the examination and look at the treatment options.

Discuss your treatment duringIf sclerotherapy is required to treat the varicose veins, this can also be performed during the same consultation. The doctor pricks the varicose vein and injects the fluid. There is a maximum amount of fluid that can be injected per session. The doctor can thus decide to continue the treatment during a subsequent consultation.
If an operation is required, a new appointment is planned. During this procedure, the doctor makes a small incision in the groin, back of the knee or ankle. She then locates the varicose vein and ties it off (ligation) before it branches off into the deep vein. Next she pulls out the full surface vein and removes the branches with a hook. The incisions are stitched up nicely and the doctor places a support stocking on the leg. Stripping takes place under general anaesthetic.
